THE LEGS

I am very proud to have a pair of Dewey Howard's cast rubber legs and knees.

These legs are perfect for the B9 builder who prefers the second and third-season robot, but I am building a first-season robot. Note the important difference in the legs:

I prefer the first-season legs because the bi-columnar legs emphasize the robot's verticality and height. This is also, quite simply, how the robot looked in the first season of the show, which I prefer over the subsequent seasons. I also like the sheen, elasticity, and thinness of the first-season legs. The individual bellows are also much larger than in the second-season legs. This allows the lower bellow registers to collapse and drape over one another so beautifully.

I am unsure whether I really think that the flashing seams that run down the front of each leg are really an aesthetic improvement. This detail, however, is something that I can live with. It increases the illusion of authenticity for my robot recreation. For some robot builders, the fantasy would be  to reach into the television set while watching "The Reluctant Stowaway" and pull out the robot and set him up in our living rooms exactly as he appeared in this episode. If turning this fantasy into reality means having flashing seams down the front of each leg, so be it.

Master B9 builder Marc Chabot and I plan to create first-season rubber legs from scratch. Stay tuned for updates.
