1894 Midwinter
                  Fair

Celebrating the Music of the Midwinter Fair:

A Musical Soiree

2019 marks the 125th anniversary of the California Midwinter Exposition, commonly known as the Midwinter Fair. Held in Golden Gate Park, the fair featured more than 100 buildings and hosted 2.5 million visitors over six months in 1894. Visitors saw the latest innovations of arts, culture, manufacturing, industry, and agriculture; and heard glorious music!

Join us and the Mechanics’ Institute for a soiree that samples the music played at the fair—waltzes, marches, polkas, and more! Midwinter Fair historian Ed Herny will provide historical context and the pieces will be performed and sung by pianist Frederick Hodges and vocalist Noah Griffin.

The event will include light refreshments, a no-host bar serving beer and wine, and a raffle featuring six authentic Midwinter Fair souvenirs.

Before the performance, we encourage you to visit Ed Herny’s Midwinter Fair exhibit in the library on the second floor.

Space is limited—register soon:

SEPARATE FEATURE FILMS: Safety Last- Saturday at 6:30 pm / The Mark of Zorro- Sunday at 1:30 pm

Coming to Fort Bragg this summer, internationally renowned pianist, Frederick Hodges will be presenting 2 Classics from Hollywood's Silver Screen, with Mr. Hodges performing his original film scores on the magnificent Falcone grand piano. On Saturday, August 24, Harold Lloyd's comedic masterpiece, "Safety Last!", will be shown, along with short comedies featuring Laurel and Hardy at their finest. On Sunday, August 25, it's the absolute Grand-daddy of swashbuckling, "action" films, "The Mark of Zorro" starring Douglas Fairbanks, in his role that defined a new cinematic genre.

This event will also include a Silent Auction of terrific items and bargains galore, a generous concession counter providing beer and wine and all one's favorite movie snacks and soft drinks, and vintage music records played on an authentic model "Victor Talking Machine" phonograph. Both performances will take place at the Eagles Hall of Fort Bragg, located at 210 N. Corry Street.

The showtimes will be Saturday night at 7:30 pm, and at 2:30 pm for the Sunday matinee, with the box office and doors opening at 6:30 pm and 1:30 pm, respectively, allowing ample time to take seats and grab some popcorn. Be sure to arrive early for an introduction by Frederick Hodges preceding the movies. Plan for this unique experience on the Mendocino Coast, and make a note on your calendar, Now!

Gatsby Afternoon

Join several hundred aficionados of the 1920s and 1930s as they step back to a time when elegance was a way of life. At the Gatsby Summer Afternoon, the panoramic front lawn of the historic Dunsmuir Hellman House becomes the stage on which every participant dresses in vintage day wear styles of the era. They play, picnic, sip champagne, and dance; the Charleston and Fox Trot is all the rage. It is reminiscent of a scene from the famous 1925 novel - The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
