FOURTH of JULY FUN FROM NO TIME LIKE
THE PRESENT!
THE PARDEE PATRIOTIC PICNIC and Stereopticon Ice Cream Social is a
charming recreation of a 1909 family Independence Day picnic and
charity bazaar, with wonderful food, games and activities for young and
old, prizes, and turn-of-the-century entertainment, including the piano
pyrotechnics of ragtime maestro Frederick Hodges.
WHEN: Saturday, July 4th, 2009 (but let's pretend that it's 1909). Open
noon till 4:00 PM
WHERE: The Pardee Home Museum, 672 11th Street, Oakland, CA 94607. This
Victorian island was home to the Pardee family from its completion in
1869 until the death of the last Pardee daughter in 1981, and still has
its front and rear gardens, with carriage house and water tower. For
this occasion, entry is through the carriage house on 12th Street.
WHO: The picnic is hosted by the Pardee Home Museum, and all proceeds
benefit preservation of the historic house and gardens.
TICKETS: For advance reservation discounts, call 510-444-2187 or go to
www.pardeehome.org. Discounts are also available for dressing
old-timey-- something that would look right for 1890-1920. Ladies, wear
your biggest picture hat and you might win the Most Picturesque award!
TICKET PRICES: Adults, $12; Children 5-11 years $4, under 5 free.
Adults can save $2 apiece off the at-the-door price by purchasing
tickets in advance. Or save the $2 by showing up in period dress-- but
only one discount apiece!
Cash or check only; sorry, no credit cards.
WHAT'S THERE: Admission includes live entertainment: the brilliant
Frederick Hodges holds forth at the pianoforte, dexterously filling the
air with lively turn-of-the-century rags and popular songs of the time,
and accompanying Mrs. Pardee’s Mellifluous Musicale, a "Bouquet of
Vocal Delights". Also included are bountiful picnic food, cold drinks,
and ice cream made on the spot, plus games and activities on the lawn
such as croquet, lawn tennis, volleyball and bubble-blowing. You can
enter the cakewalk to win a delectable prize, and view the latest 3D
pictures in a stereopticon. At the children's craft table boys and
girls can create a special handmade keepsake or gift to take home. The
Benevolent Bazaar (“All for a Good Cause!”) offers a plenteous
assortment of toys, books, sheet music, knickknacks and who-knows-what
for sale.
DIRECTIONS: From the south on 880, take the exit marked "10th and 14th
Streets”, and proceed north two blocks along Castro to the museum. From
San Francisco or Berkeley, turn off 580 onto 980 and take the exit
marked "11th and 12th Streets." Turn left on 11th and the house is
clearly visible after crossing over the freeway. Four blocks from the
12th St. BART station; AC Transit bus lines 14 and 62 provide direct
service to the house on 11th and 12th Streets.
PARKING: It's a holiday! There's free parking on the street-- except on
11th Street.
Come and enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the past-- and you'll enjoy your
day even more knowing that you're supporting the continued preservation
of one of the Bay Area's oldest historic homes.

Piano Lessons With Frederick Hodges During the WestCoast Ragtime
Festival
Back by popular demand, Frederick Hodges has graciously agreed to give
piano lessons the day before the festival begins, on Thursday November
19th at the Red Lion Hotel.
Improve your ragtime and general piano playing skills with a piano
lesson from famed ragtime pianist and music teacher Frederick Hodges.
Learn how to improve, embellish, and improvise within the ragtime and
novelty piano idiom from an encouraging, patient, perceptive,
insightful, and fun-loving teacher. The private ragtime piano lesson
will focus on the individual student and his/her needs and goals, and
help to nurture the growth of natural musical talent. The lesson will
focus intensely on all aspects of piano mastery: technique, musicality,
talent, discipline, and passion.
Auditors are also welcome to attend a scheduled lesson, with the
permission of the primary student. Auditors will benefit from listening
to the instruction and advice given to the student but will be free of
any pressure to perform or participate. Students of all ages and levels
of proficiency welcome.

Return to a time when
movies were shown with vaudeville acts,
illustrated songs, hand-colored slides, and lecturers in
frock coats. See Illusionist extraordinaire, Reed Kirk
Rahlmann with his notorious contortionist
routine, still uncensored but all-new, rivaling Houdini
and the Great Sandow for its outrages against the
human body. See Greg Tiede impersonating Winsor McCay
in his famous vaudeville act featuring
Gertie the Dinosaur, the world’s first cartoon
superstar. See the Georges M li s fantasy masterpiece
A Trip to the Moon performed as San Francisco
originally saw it – with narration – recreated by
the Niles Essanay Thespian Ensemble. See four lost
illustrated songs. Hear [and see!] songs
accompanied by authentic handcolored magic lantern slides and
song stylings by the inimitable Lori Leigh
Gieleghem and Sean Sharp. The entire affair will be
presided over by Frederick Hodges, who will accompany
the live acts and additional movies in the
authentic nickelodeon style. 35mm Prints will be shown
on our Powers Cameragraph 6B
hand-cranked projector.
