THE PARDEE PATRIOTIC PICNIC and Ice Cream Social
12:00 noon to 4:00

Mrs. Pardee’s Mellifluous Musicale with Frederick Hodges at the pianoforte
12:00 to 4:00 PM.

A charming recreation of a 1908 family Independence Day picnic and charity bazaar, with wonderful food, games and activities for young and old, prizes, and turn of the century entertainment. Period dress very strongly encouraged, and rewarded with a discount! Ladies, wear your biggest picture hat and you might win the Most Picturesque award.

FOURTH of JULY FUN FROM NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT!

THE PARDEE PATRIOTIC PICNIC and Stereopticon Ice Cream Social is a charming recreation of a 1909 family Independence Day picnic and charity bazaar, with wonderful food, games and activities for young and old, prizes, and turn-of-the-century entertainment, including the piano pyrotechnics of ragtime maestro Frederick Hodges.

WHEN: Saturday, July 4th, 2009 (but let's pretend that it's 1909). Open noon till 4:00 PM

WHERE: The Pardee Home Museum, 672 11th Street, Oakland, CA 94607. This Victorian island was home to the Pardee family from its completion in 1869 until the death of the last Pardee daughter in 1981, and still has its front and rear gardens, with carriage house and water tower. For this occasion, entry is through the carriage house on 12th Street.

CONTACT: Phone 510-444-2187 http://www.pardeehome.org/

WHO: The picnic is hosted by the Pardee Home Museum, and all proceeds benefit preservation of the historic house and gardens.

TICKETS: For advance reservation discounts, call 510-444-2187 or go to www.pardeehome.org. Discounts are also available for dressing old-timey-- something that would look right for 1890-1920. Ladies, wear your biggest picture hat and you might win the Most Picturesque award!

TICKET PRICES: Adults, $12; Children 5-11 years $4, under 5 free.
Adults can save $2 apiece off the at-the-door price by purchasing tickets in advance. Or save the $2 by showing up in period dress-- but only one discount apiece!
Cash or check only; sorry, no credit cards.

WHAT'S THERE: Admission includes live entertainment: the brilliant Frederick Hodges holds forth at the pianoforte, dexterously filling the air with lively turn-of-the-century rags and popular songs of the time, and accompanying Mrs. Pardee’s Mellifluous Musicale, a "Bouquet of Vocal Delights". Also included are bountiful picnic food, cold drinks, and ice cream made on the spot, plus games and activities on the lawn such as croquet, lawn tennis, volleyball and bubble-blowing. You can enter the cakewalk to win a delectable prize, and view the latest 3D pictures in a stereopticon. At the children's craft table boys and girls can create a special handmade keepsake or gift to take home. The Benevolent Bazaar (“All for a Good Cause!”) offers a plenteous assortment of toys, books, sheet music, knickknacks and who-knows-what for sale.

DIRECTIONS: From the south on 880, take the exit marked "10th and 14th Streets”, and proceed north two blocks along Castro to the museum. From San Francisco or Berkeley, turn off 580 onto 980 and take the exit marked "11th and 12th Streets." Turn left on 11th and the house is clearly visible after crossing over the freeway. Four blocks from the 12th St. BART station; AC Transit bus lines 14 and 62 provide direct service to the house on 11th and 12th Streets.
PARKING: It's a holiday! There's free parking on the street-- except on 11th Street.

Come and enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the past-- and you'll enjoy your day even more knowing that you're supporting the continued preservation of one of the Bay Area's oldest historic homes.

    Saturday, 26 July 2008
Frederick Hodges accompanies the 1927 silent film classic:

    Valley Of The Giants

    7:00 PM

    Trinidad Town Hall
    409 Trinity Street
    Trinidad, CA

TRINIDAD MUSEUM and GREEN DIAMOND RESOURCE COMPANY PRESENT
    VALLEY of the GIANTS

THE VALLEY OF THE GIANTS (1927) Directed by Charles Brabin Starring Milton Sills and Doris Kenyon
Based on the novel by San Francisco’s own Peter B. Kyne, The Valley of the Giants is a white-hot adventure yarn filmed among the giant sequoias of Kings Canyon National Park in the Sierra Nevada. Spectacular vistas frame the lightning-paced tale of a business magnate who fights a scurrilous railroad tycoon for control of the lumber industry. The magnate’s son steps in to set things right, and all hell busts loose. Forgotten silent star Milton Sills is terrific in the lead role as the fists-and-brains son, and the thrills come fast and furious.

Trinidad Museum Society and Green Diamond Resource Company present
the 1927 classic silent film, Valley of the Giants on Saturday, July
26 at 7 pm, Trinidad Town Hall, 409 Trinity Street.

World-renowned film preservationist and film-owner David Shepard
will project the film while Frederick Hodges, a favorite Bay Area
accompanist at silent film showings, will play the Steinway.  Dorothy
Bradley, Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum President, will be a guest of
    TMS as well.

The film is an adaptation of the Peter B. Kyne (1880-1957) novel of
the same name.  Kyne had worked in Carson and Dolbeer's lumber firm from
1900 to 1906 and admired Carson enough to base his character in the
novel, John Cardigan, on him according to Tom E. Murray's book, "Movies
    Made in Humboldt County".

The movie stars Milton Sills, Doris Kenyon, Arthur Stone, Paul
Hurst and George Fawcett and was directed by Charles J. Brabin.  The
cast and crew of about 50 stayed in Humboldt County for 6 weeks in 1927
and other than some special effect work at the start of the film, the
locations are authentic and include Crannell scenes.  The speeding train
wreck, filmed in one take, is a particular highlight.

The film screening is a benefit for the Trinidad Museum building
fund.  Suggested donation is $15.  For reservations, leave a message at
707-677-3816 with the number in your party.  Admission is at the door,
    which opens at 6:30 pm.

The "new" Trinidad Museum, a circa 1899-1900 bungalow moved to its
site at Trinidad's entry way, is over three-quarters finished at 400
Main Street and is set to open this year.  In the meantime, the "old"
Trinidad Museum at 529-B Trinity Street across from the Eatery
Restaurant continues to be open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 am to
    4 pm until Labor Day.

Contact Trinidad Museum President Patti Fleschner at
baycity@humboldt1.com or call 677-3816 for inquiries.

Fast, furious and flying feet will gather from far and near for the San Francisco Shag Jam. Nearly 80 years after the swing kids of the 1930s started dancing the Collegiate Shag, a melting pot of young and old convene to flip, flop and fly on the dance floor.

The Verdi Club is located in the Portrero Hill district of San Francisco, and was built in the 1930s, and was for many years an Italian social club.

They have a huge dance floor, an elevated stage with proscenium arch, and a roomy bar where you can order a refreshing libation in between strutting your stuff on the dance floor.

The Collegiate Ball features a Vintage Hair Styling Class for the Dolls and Vintage Clothes Styling Class for the Daddy O's, Dance Performances, Collegiate Shag Championships (Prelims & Spotlight Finals), Pin-Ups and Classic Cars! Join in on the history and dress in your best Vintage College/Varsity Sweater wear.

    Ahwahnee Heritage Holidays
    Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite National Park
    Ahwahnee Hotel
The Royal Society Jazz Orchestra will be performing once again in Yosemite Valley for the annual two-day Ahwahnee Heritage Holidays at the Ahwahnee Hotel. This is an event to remember! Experience the high-style rustic charm of the Ahwahnee Hotel nestled in the majestic Yosemite Valley, and the heart-stirring music of the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra! This rare event is co-sponsored by the Art Deco Society Of California, and together with historian Tom Bopp, they have organized many fascinating lectures, demonstrations, and musical presentations related to the early years of the last century in Yosemite. This year's special theme is Winter in Yosemite. Special presentations will show that from the start, winter activities were concocted with delightful creativity, indoors and out. Ice skating, tobogganing, ski-joring, and snowshoe-baseball drew guests outside, while ballroom dancing, musical events, and the Bracebridge Dinner enhanced the evening hours.

Music schedule — these Yosemite events are FREE to the public!:

    • March 2, Sunday evening, 7:00 to 10:00 PM Don Neely's Royal Society Sextet with Carla Normand in the Great Lounge at the Ahwahnee Hotel.

    • March 3, Tuesday evening, 8:00 to 11:00 PM, Royal Society Jazz Orchestra plays for the Grand Ball, Great Lounge, Ahwahnee Hotel. Includes dance performance by the DecoBelles.

RESERVATIONS. Please call the main reservation number and ask for Ahwahnee Heritage Holidays. Phone number: 559-253-2075. Website is www.YosemitePark.com Also you may call the Art Deco Society Of California for information at 415-982-DECO (3326) or www.artdecosociety.org
Briefly, lodging packages are for the Ahwahnee Hotel or Yosemite Lodge, for either two nights or three. Prices are on web site Yosemitepark.com/heritage and include the gala dinner in the breathtaking Ahwahnee Hotel dining room.
All music, lectures, and presentations at the Heritage Holidays event at the Ahwahnee Hotel are free to the public, except for the dinner. You can camp in or outside the valley, and still attend the events free.
Singer and pianist Tom Bopp, who regularly performs at The Wawona Hotel in Yosemite will be singing with the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra and performing in the Ahwahnee Hotel Dining Room during the Gala Dinner and afterwards in the Ahwahnee Bar. Speakeasy music in the bar will feature various artists from the RSJO including Frederick Hodges, plus singers Sarah Klotz de Aguilar, and Ann Gibson.
