At The Ragtime Ball
Everybody Join in the Chorus:
A History of the Illustrated Song
Originally presented at the 2019 Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, Missouri, this seminar features Sean Sharp, who will give a history, examination, and demonstration of the illustrated song -- the ragtime era's own version of the music video.  First shown in vaudeville and then in nickelodeon theatres (1894-1914), illustrated song slides were hand colored, life model photographs that depicted the stories of the songs' lyrics.  Sean will tell the history of this forgotten American art form: its beginnings in vaudeville, its heyday in the first movie theatres, and its sudden decline.  He will also talk about how the slides were made, the evolving style of the slides over a 20-year period, the subsequent history of the slides up to the present, and his own restoration work with the slide images.  Sean will be assisted by Frederick Hodges on piano and vocals, as they demonstrate seven illustrated songs during the seminar.

Gatsby Afternoon

Join several hundred aficionados of the 1920s and 1930s as they step back to a time when elegance was a way of life. At the Gatsby Summer Afternoon, the panoramic front lawn of the historic Dunsmuir Hellman House becomes the stage on which every participant dresses in vintage day wear styles of the era. They play, picnic, sip champagne, and dance; the Charleston and Fox Trot is all the rage. It is reminiscent of a scene from the famous 1925 novel - The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
